Manufacturing methods

A part usually needs more than one manufacturing operation. Start with its function, material, geometry and quantity, then select a route that leaves the right features available for assembly and inspection.

Explore each method

Choose a route, not just a machine

Separate blank preparation, shape creation, joining, finishing and inspection. A laser-cut plate can still need machining at bearing seats; a welded frame may need its mounting faces finished after assembly. Each operation must leave enough access and allowance for the next.

Compare the complete part cost

Review setup, tooling, stock form, scrap, secondary work and inspection together. A lower cutting cost does not help if the part needs extensive manual correction. Prototype quantities and repeat batches may justify different routes.

Define the requirement before sourcing

Identify functional dimensions and interfaces, material grade, quantity, finish and inspection records. QDM can develop the design and coordinate project-specific fabrication partners. The method articles describe engineering considerations rather than a fixed in-house equipment list.

These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
