How the process fits the part
Casting can place material around a complex shape and reduce the amount removed by subsequent machining. Sand, investment and die-casting routes have different tooling and production considerations. A die-casting capability for one alloy or part does not establish suitability for every machine component. Discuss the actual route with a foundry specialist.
Design decisions before manufacture
Review wall distribution, transitions, draft, core access and the features that will be machined. Identify locating surfaces and leave an agreed allowance for finishing. If a prototype is machined from solid stock, document how its geometry and material state differ from the proposed casting so that testing is interpreted correctly.
Inspect the finished result
Define dimensional, surface and any internal-quality requirements around the part’s role. Components involving sealing, pressure or repeated loading need an application-specific inspection plan. Specify the condition in which the casting will be accepted, including machining and treatment, rather than judging the finished component only by the raw shape.
What to send for a quotation
Provide alloy requirements, geometry, quantity and expected repeat demand. Include machining, finish, critical interfaces and documentation needs. QDM can review the mechanical component and coordinate foundry and machining work within an agreed project. Tooling deliverables, ownership and any specialist qualification are stated separately in the commercial scope.
What to define for the project.
| Decision | What to define | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Alloy and casting method | Requires a foundry review |
| Tooling | Mould and core arrangement | Changes cost and access |
| Allowance | Faces and bores to machine | Protects final interfaces |
| Quality | Dimensional and internal criteria | Depends on part function |
| Quantity | Prototype and repeat demand | Influences route selection |
These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
