How the process fits the part
External diameters, faces, grooves, bores and threads can be developed around a turning route. The complete component may also require milling, drilling or grinding. Decide which features share an axis and which need a separate operation, rather than assuming that every feature can be produced in one setup.
Design decisions before manufacture
Long slender parts and thin sleeves need a workholding review. Identify bearing and seal surfaces, shoulders and thread run-outs before selecting dimensions. A central bore can influence support and tool access. Where a shaft mates with a purchased bearing or coupling, use that component’s interface requirements to define the fit.
Inspect the finished result
Check the functional diameters and their relationship to the selected datum axis. Include runout, shoulder position and the surface condition where relevant. Measurement should reflect the final material and treatment state. If grinding follows heat treatment, distinguish intermediate machining allowances from the finished drawing dimensions.
What to send for a quotation
Send the stock material and condition, total length, quantity and important mating interfaces. Explain whether threads are functional connections or assembly aids. Include any heat-treatment, coating and inspection needs. QDM can review the mechanical design and coordinate the agreed machining package through project-specific manufacturing partners.
What to define for the project.
| Decision | What to define | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Stock | Grade, diameter and condition | Supports a workable machining route |
| Fit | Bearing, seal or coupling interface | Defines the functional diameter |
| Axis relationship | Required runout or concentricity | Avoids unnecessary blanket tolerances |
| Treatment | Before or after final machining | May change dimensions |
| Quantity | One-off or repeat series | Changes setup planning |
These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
