Where milling fits

A milled part can combine faces, pockets, slots and holes in one component. The choice depends on whether the machine and tooling can reach those features while holding the workpiece securely. Multi-axis access can help with some geometries, but it does not remove the need to define a practical setup and inspection route.

Design around access and function

Identify the surfaces that locate bearings, rails or mating components. Avoid making every dimension equally restrictive. Deep narrow pockets, thin walls and small internal corners can require different tools or additional setups. Discuss corner radii and access with the machining partner before freezing the part design.

Inspect the relationships that matter

Specify which faces form the measurement reference and which features must align after assembly. A useful review considers position, flatness and the fit of purchased components alongside the external dimensions. Where clamping could distort a thin part, agree how it will be supported for machining and measurement.

Prepare a useful machining brief

Provide the material grade and condition, quantity, main dimensions, critical interfaces and finish. Identify features that can change and any available mating samples. QDM can develop a machinable design and coordinate the agreed supplier scope, with manufacturing drawings and permitted use defined in the project terms.
