Define the prototype’s purpose
A layout model, interface mock-up and working mechanical prototype serve different decisions. Identify whether the next review concerns fit, handling, motion or a process function. Make that purpose visible in the scope so a simplified prototype is neither overbuilt nor mistaken for a complete production product.
Select a route suited to the first build
Use available components and reviewed manufacturing processes where they support the trial. Record temporary materials and provisional interfaces clearly in the engineering record. Safeguards and suitable operating conditions must be defined by the responsible team before trials. Identify the prototype’s limitations so its result can be assessed against the intended development objective.
Assemble with review and access in mind
Check the purchased component interfaces, adjustment points and access needed to observe the function. Record changes made during assembly and distinguish them from the released design. Work with the agreed controls or electronics team so the first trial uses a defined configuration rather than several undocumented hardware changes.
Prepare the planned trial
Agree samples, operating conditions, observers and the evidence needed for the next decision. Prototype manufacture and testing can be quoted as separate or combined packages. QDM coordinates the agreed mechanical build and specialist interfaces, with acceptance and subsequent revision work defined for the project rather than assumed from delivery of the prototype.
What to define for the project.
| Decision | What to define | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Fit, layout or functional question | Keeps the first build focused |
| Configuration | Released and provisional components | Defines the trial article |
| Assembly | Adjustments and access | Supports an observable trial |
| Samples | Representative inputs | Makes the result useful |
| Review | Evidence and next decision | Connects build and development |
These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
