Engineering materials

Material selection connects performance, manufacturing and the operating environment. A family name is only the start: the grade, temper, product form and processing history can change how the finished part behaves.

Explore each material

Begin with the exposure and load

Describe static and repeated loads, sliding contact, temperature, moisture, process fluids and cleaning agents. Separate product-contact components from structural parts. Use supplier data for the exact grade and representative trials where the application remains uncertain.

Choose material and process together

A material suitable for a machined prototype may need a different grade for moulding or welding. Include surface treatment, heat treatment, assembly and tolerances in the selection. Properties stated for raw stock do not automatically describe a finished assembly.

Keep the selection traceable

Record the material designation, supplier documentation and any restrictions on substitutions. For food-contact, biomedical or chemically demanding applications, specify the required evidence with the customer’s responsible specialists; generic material labels alone do not establish suitability.

These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
