Where to consider this material
Gray iron and ductile iron should not be treated as interchangeable materials. Consider the part’s loads, connections and required behaviour before selecting. A continuous-cast stock component and a purpose-made casting also have different geometry and supply considerations. Use grade-specific information rather than transferring properties from one family to another.
Connect the grade with manufacturing
Review whether the part is machined from available stock or cast close to its final shape. Identify critical faces, bores and machining allowances. For a shaped casting, discuss wall distribution, tooling and finishing with the foundry. For a stock-machined prototype, record how its route differs from any planned later casting.
Check the operating environment
Assess repeated loading, local stress at fasteners and the environment in which the part will operate. A rigid-looking design does not establish its structural suitability. Agree surface treatment and handling needs and identify whether any specialist material or structural review is required for the chosen component.
Specify the actual material
Specify the iron family, exact grade, stock or casting route and final machining requirements. Define dimensional and material acceptance records around the part’s purpose. QDM can coordinate the mechanical design and supplier package, with specialist foundry or material assessment included only where it is explicitly agreed in the scope.
What to define for the project.
| Decision | What to define | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Family | Gray or ductile iron | Their behaviour differs |
| Route | Stock machining or shaped casting | Changes the production plan |
| Features | Faces, bores and allowances | Defines final interfaces |
| Load | Component-specific conditions | Guides technical review |
| Acceptance | Grade evidence and final checks | Confirms the supplied condition |
These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
