Where to consider this material
Describe the temperature, load, exposure and required dimensional behaviour before considering PEEK. Unfilled, reinforced and bearing-oriented grades serve different priorities. A material’s general heat or chemical resistance is not a complete component rating. Review the supplier’s exact grade information under the conditions relevant to the device.
Connect the grade with manufacturing
Connect the selection to machining, moulding or another agreed route. Identify functional surfaces, stock availability and any processing state that affects inspection. A replacement for a metal component must be reviewed at the geometry and interface level; the same shape does not automatically provide the same stiffness or connection behaviour.
Check the operating environment
Include cleaning or sterilization exposure where applicable and identify who defines those requirements. Chemical suitability depends on actual conditions and the selected grade. For biomedical or product-contact use, obtain the appropriate supplier evidence and application review. Generic PEEK availability does not establish that a complete device is qualified for its intended use.
Specify the actual material
Specify grade, modification, form, quantity and required documentation. Explain why a higher-performance material is needed and what a trial must demonstrate. QDM can develop the mechanical component and coordinate a reviewed supplier scope. Specialist qualification and final acceptance are defined separately rather than implied by the material family name.
What to define for the project.
| Decision | What to define | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Requirement | Temperature, load and exposure | Justifies the selection |
| Grade | Unfilled or modified PEEK | Different priorities need review |
| Geometry | Interface and stiffness needs | Prevents an unreviewed substitution |
| Process | Manufacturing and inspection state | Defines the supplied component |
| Evidence | Application-specific documents | Does not replace device qualification |
These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
