Where to consider this material
Start with load, stiffness, weight, connection and temperature requirements. Plate, extrusion and cast stock can serve different designs. Alloys such as 6061 and 6082 illustrate why a specific alloy and temper are needed; their availability and processing behaviour must be confirmed for the part and supplier rather than assumed from a general comparison.
Connect the grade with manufacturing
Review machining, welding and forming with the selected condition. A welded structure and a machined precision plate may need different approaches. For extruded frames, define how rails, panels and purchased modules will attach. If a component is treated after machining, account for the effect on mating surfaces and important dimensions.
Check the operating environment
Assess corrosion exposure, dissimilar-metal contacts and the selected finish. Anodizing, painting and other surface routes serve different purposes. Appearance and a functional interface may require different specifications. Where a housing contains sensitive components, define thermal and electrical interface needs with the relevant electronics team before selecting the final arrangement.
Specify the actual material
Specify alloy, temper, stock form and any surface treatment. Identify critical dimensions, fastening interfaces and records needed for the project. QDM can review these choices as part of mechanical development and supplier coordination. A material substitution should be reviewed against manufacturing and performance needs rather than accepted from visual similarity.
What to define for the project.
| Decision | What to define | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Alloy | Designation and temper | Defines the starting material |
| Form | Plate, extrusion or casting | Changes design and supply |
| Connections | Fasteners, welds and mating metals | Affects assembly behaviour |
| Finish | Anodizing or coating requirements | Must suit function |
| Interfaces | Mechanical, thermal or electrical need | Requires a coordinated review |
These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
