Where to consider this material
Common austenitic grades such as 304 and 316 are starting points for a selection discussion, rather than automatic approvals. Define contact fluids, temperature, cleaning and mechanical loads before choosing. A more demanding corrosion environment can require a different grade. Use the supplier’s grade-specific information and the responsible process team’s requirement.
Connect the grade with manufacturing
Consider cutting, bending, machining and welding as a connected route. Agree the material condition and any grade variant needed for the selected joining process. Protect important finished surfaces through fabrication and identify whether treatment or finishing follows welding. A familiar alloy designation does not remove the need to review how the component will be made.
Check the operating environment
For food or laboratory equipment, discuss access, drainage, joints and cleaning as well as the metal. A smooth-looking surface alone does not establish hygienic suitability. In chemical service, compatibility must be assessed for the actual medium and conditions. Record where product-contact and structural requirements differ within the same assembly.
Specify the actual material
State the exact grade, stock form, surface requirement and material documentation. Define relevant weld and finishing expectations and the final inspection state. QDM can incorporate these decisions into mechanical development and manufacturing coordination; specialist hygienic, process or biomedical qualification must be identified separately in the agreed scope.
What to define for the project.
| Decision | What to define | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Grade | Specific alloy and product form | Matches the application |
| Exposure | Fluid, cleaning and temperature | Guides compatibility review |
| Surface | Finish and condition after fabrication | Affects use and inspection |
| Joints | Welding and cleaning access | Needs a design review |
| Evidence | Required material documents | Supports traceable selection |
These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
