Where to consider this material
Begin with the function: a seal, guide or insulating element presents different requirements. Filled and unfilled PTFE grades can behave differently. Low friction and chemical resistance should not be used as a universal approval. Assess the selected material together with the mating surface, movement and required service condition.
Connect the grade with manufacturing
Review machining access, support and how the finished component is retained. Allow the geometry and fit to reflect the material’s deformation behaviour under the intended load. Where a seal is involved, define the groove, counterpart and installation arrangement with the responsible seal specialist rather than treating a generic ring shape as a completed design.
Check the operating environment
Describe temperature, fluids, cleaning and whether the part is static or moving. A supplier compatibility statement for one medium does not automatically cover a mixture or a different condition. Representative functional trials may be needed to confirm a difficult interface, particularly where leakage or dimensional change is important.
Specify the actual material
Specify grade, filler where relevant, stock form and the application inputs. Identify the required supplier documentation and acceptance checks. QDM can integrate a reviewed material or seal choice into mechanical development and manufacturing coordination; final seal suitability and process-specific evidence are confirmed in the agreed project scope.
What to define for the project.
| Decision | What to define | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Grade | Unfilled or filled PTFE | Changes useful behaviour |
| Function | Seal, guide or insulation | Sets the design priorities |
| Support | Retention and mating geometry | Controls the interface |
| Exposure | Actual medium and conditions | Needs specific review |
| Acceptance | Fit or functional trial | Checks the completed component |
These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
