Where to consider this material
Describe the contact, load cycle and likely failure mechanism before choosing a grade. A part may need resistance to abrasive wear, deformation or chipping, and those requirements do not always point to the same selection. Review the actual tool function with the material and treatment specialists instead of choosing solely from a familiar designation.
Connect the grade with manufacturing
Connect rough machining, heat treatment and finishing at the design stage. Identify dimensional allowance and features that need grinding or EDM. Thin sections, abrupt geometry changes and inaccessible surfaces can affect the route. Agree the supplier’s grade-specific processing recommendations and which operation establishes the final functional dimension.
Check the operating environment
Include operating temperature, lubricant, process material and cleaning where relevant. A wear surface should be assessed together with its mating component; changing only one material may move the failure elsewhere. If a finish or coating is proposed, identify its objective and how the final component will be inspected.
Specify the actual material
State the exact grade and required condition, treatment records and acceptance measurements. Explain the tool’s function and any existing failure observations. QDM can review the mechanical arrangement and coordinate a suitable manufacturing package. Final grade selection and treatment requirements are confirmed for the actual component rather than generalized across all tooling.
What to define for the project.
| Decision | What to define | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Failure mode | Wear, deformation or chipping | Guides grade selection |
| Condition | Treatment and target state | Defines the useful material |
| Finishing | Grinding, EDM or other final work | Protects functional geometry |
| Mating part | Contact material and loading | Checks the whole interface |
| Records | Material and treatment evidence | Supports repeat manufacture |
These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
