Review the complete manufacturing route
Follow each important component from stock or purchased part to finished assembly. Identify secondary machining, joining, treatment and inspection. A prototype that used a convenient one-off route may need another approach for repeat quantities. Compare the complete route rather than optimizing one isolated operation at the expense of later work.
Make assembly and inspection practical
Review locating features, fastener access, adjustments and the order of assembly. Confirm that the specified dimensions can be measured in the intended finished state. Reduce avoidable complexity where it does not support the function, while retaining the interfaces and material requirements established by the design and trial reviews.
Confirm the supply and documentation package
Check component availability, material designations and supplier responsibilities. Record approved alternatives and the review needed before substitutions. Define the drawings, parts list, assembly information and inspection records included in the package. Manufacturing deliverables and permitted use remain subject to the project’s additional contractual conditions where applicable.
Establish the next build decision
Agree the released configuration and any issues to evaluate in a pilot build. Identify quantity, acceptance and change-control responsibilities before repeating manufacture. QDM can coordinate this engineering and supplier review as a distinct work package; repeat production should follow a reviewed scope rather than an unqualified assumption that the first prototype is ready to copy.
What to define for the project.
| Decision | What to define | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Operations through final assembly | Checks total production work |
| Assembly | Access, locating and sequence | Supports a repeatable build |
| Inspection | Functional dimensions and method | Makes acceptance practical |
| Supply | Components and permitted alternatives | Controls substitutions |
| Release | Configuration and documentation scope | Defines the next build |
These notes support an initial engineering discussion. Material grades, manufacturing routes, dimensions and acceptance criteria are selected for the actual application and confirmed in the project specification.
