01. Choose a manageable work package
Describe the assembly, mechanism or documentation package that needs support. Explain the functional requirement and the surrounding machine. Identify which parts of the project stay with your team and which decisions the external engineer may propose.
02. Define interfaces before details
List mounting points, envelope dimensions, product contact areas, purchased components and connections to adjacent equipment. Share the latest agreed input information and identify the person who can resolve interface questions.
03. Make deliverables specific
Agree whether the package includes a concept, detailed mechanical design, manufacturing drawings, bill of materials, assembly documentation or manufacturing coordination. Specify the required naming, revision and review conventions rather than relying on a generic promise of complete design.
04. Use review points to prevent rework
Review the operating principle and layout before detailed parts are developed. Review critical components before drawings are released. A short, agreed review sequence helps identify problems while changes are still manageable.
05. Connect design with manufacturing
State fabrication methods, available supplier capabilities and assembly constraints. Review access, part count and tolerances where they affect practical manufacture. The output should support the next project stage, whether that is a prototype or a production release.
06. Discuss project-based or ongoing support
A single work package may suit a project-based arrangement. Repeated development needs may suit ongoing cooperation. In either case, agree responsibilities, availability, communication and commercial terms before starting.
