Define the parent roll and material

Specify material type, thickness, width and whether it is adhesive or coated. Parent-roll diameter, core size and weight affect loading arrangements. Contact conditions require additional review for easily scratched or adhesive surfaces. Samples help assess the cutting method.

Prepare the slit layout

State the required strip widths, number of finished rolls and changing combinations. Continuous production at one width and frequently changing jobs have different adjustment needs. Dust, burrs, fibres or adhesive accumulation at the cut edge can be included in acceptance criteria. Blade type is assessed around the actual material and required result.

Check winding quality separately

Material cut to the correct width can cause problems on the next machine if it is not wound properly. Check edge alignment, layer arrangement and core attachment. Material tension and guidance that prevents sideways movement influence the result. Review speed targets together with acceptable roll quality.

Define winding and rewinding requirements

Specify roll-material width, thickness, surface and length to be wound. Core diameter, outside diameter, width and weight of the parent and finished rolls affect handling and winding. Starting-end placement, roll changes and unloading are planned alongside automation level.

Plan loading and finished-roll removal

Parent-roll loading, core fitting and finished-roll removal affect the complete operation. Operator access and handling space become important with multiple outputs. QDM can discuss custom slitting and rewinding arrangements, roll handling or auxiliary mechanisms for an existing machine. Standard supplier quotations can be compared using a shared requirements brief.

Run trials with a representative roll

Agree trial material, parent-roll conditions, slit layout and operating duration beforehand. Check strip width, edge condition and finished-roll quality together. A maximum speed demonstrated on another material should not be assumed for your production. Share material samples and finished-roll expectations for quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Can film and tape be slit on the same machine?

It depends on the material range, blades and handling arrangement. Representative samples should be assessed.

How is the number of output rolls determined?

Parent width, slit layout and winding arrangement are considered together.

Is higher speed always better?

No. Edge and winding quality must remain within the agreed acceptance criteria.
